Few buildings in the real world are an architect’s dream - no building remains as it was designed to be. From the moment inhabitants arrive, places become used, worn, amended, marked, broken, customized and as the years go by colours fade and construction falls. In this exhibition, Paul Clifford looks at forgotten and neglected facades, bringing them together from around the world over many years.
Doors and windows should offer both a way in and a view out. However, many of the entrances and exits here are blocked, the unglamorous edifices of buildings and rooms that are no longer wanted, no longer used, no longer required.
Architectural features like these have their form and location dictated by their function, a building is useless without them. Yet doors and windows have always represented so much more - shelter, sanctuary, incarceration, danger, mystery, desire and temptation.
